Gerhard,

You better pick up Oracle 8i since is smaller than 9i. For 9i you have to chunck at least 3 Gb disk space.

When doing the installation, uncheck all Options (Replication, InterMedia, Visual Retrieval, etc). Do not install any Oracle Enterprise Manager options, and in Networking choose only Client and Server. Open each "+" and skip the docs on the disk (you can use Inet to search for info).

When creating DB do not install JAVA (it takes space, memory and much longer to complete).

For SQL programming; SQL*Plus will be your first friend. If you need some fancy tools check here:
