utl_file_dir param stops server

Hi all,
another utl_file related question.
We have an Oracle 8.1.7 server running on Windows 2000. If I add the utl_file_dir parameter to the init.ora file the database no longer starts...
The StartOracleORCL service starts with no problems and the instance appears to start but the database is never mounted or opened. (i.e. nothing in the alert log).
I can connect with svrmgrl and start the database manually ('startup' command).

This happens regardless of what value is given for utl_file_dir. E.g. *, c:\spam etc. etc.
I can write to the specified directory after starting.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening ?

Thanks very much,
