As I heard, Larry Ellison is betting his business on Intel/Linux - call your Oracle rep and ask if he/she can confirm this. Intel-based hardware costs substantially lower than comparable Sun or HP hardware while packing the same punch in terms of performance. Linux is quite stable already to be used as supporting OS for your Oracle database, it clusters well, too, and Ellison said they gonna fully support Linux and are going to migrate to Linux clusters themselves by this summer... 2) is not an option as Oracle discontinued support for x86 Solaris. 4) is more expensive than 2), but if you trust Microsoft more than RedHat and are willing to pay extra $$$ for server OS license and a bit more server memory - that's your choice then. Don't try to use AMD's in your multiprocessor servers - AMD's yet to come up with good SMP support in their Athlons, though on desktops they rule... If you just need 2-CPU system though, you can safely choose Athlon MP - more bang for the buck and they work exceptionally well in dual-cpu systems. Don't go for Pentium 4 systems either - 4's are not server processors despite the fact that they look faster. Get PIII's (or Xeons if you have enough funds to afford them) if you're going to stick with Intel.

Just my 2 cents.
