Oracle Error ORA-01012: not logged on

Good Day,

            I have a Pro*C application (WinNT, Oracle 8.1.6) that intermittenly returns "ORA-01012: not logged on" from a select statement. Generally when this error is returned subsequent calls are successful. What conditions could cause this error to be returned intemittenly?
