I didn't think so but knowing this guy, I had to cover that base.

Yes. But the government office I'm contracted to had so many bad experiences with versions 5 and 6 that they refuse to upgrade unless a gun is pointed at their heads. The only reason the majority of our databases are on 7.3.4 is because it was the lowest numbered version that would run on the Y2K compliant version of Solaris; if that were not the case, we'd probably still be in version 6. The 8.1.5 database only exists because it was the lowest version available that would run another piece of software they wanted.

I've always used orainst when creating new instances. I hadn't heard of dbca. I'll try it. Thanks.
