sorry.... i should have ststed that this was Oracle 8.1.7 on Redhat 6.2 - Even all paths seem to be correct and the instance is up and usable oraback does not seem to think it is? It is alive if i do a tnsping as the oracle user which is the same user that runs trhe script?

Everything seems to be there except...
IFILE=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/config${ORACLE_SID}.ora

could someone explain to me please what should go in the IFILE as i'm having trouble finding out?
