I wouldn't say it was typical.

Let's leave aside SYS for the moment, because he can be authenticated in several different ways that can complicate the situation.

You say you changed SYSTEM's password. I take it you did an 'alter user system identified by blah' command. If so, that change goes into the data dictionary, so the only way you could ever face a problem with an incorrect username or password (apart from an astounding inability to type accurately) would be if you weren't connecting to the right database (and hence were connecting to a different data dictionary). So: does connecting as SYSTEM work?

Then we come to connecting internal. Don't, is the short advice. Connect someone/password AS SYSDBA is the proper way to connect in 8i. The usual password at that point is "oracle", but if you've changed SYS's password, then it should be the one you specified.

The only other thing I can say is that 8.1.5 is not certified on Windows 2000, and would, even if it were, be the version I would use if Beelzebub and all his evil minions insisted upon it, and even then only after an appeal to the High Court. Talk about bugs: that version is a walking arboretum.

Regards
HJR
