How long do you want it to take to recover? If you take hot backups 1/year
then if you have to recover you are going to have to allow Oracle apply all
the archive logs for the file you lost to bring it up to date. (assuming you
lost a file) Depending upon how fast your system is and how much data is
changed since the last hot backup this might take quite awhile.
Even if I had a stand by database (trying to convince management to do that) I would still do frequent hot backups. When it comes to backup I am a belt and suspenders type. (make sure you have multiple ways to get the data back. For example, in a perfect world I would
1. have my archive logs mirrored to multiple destinations 2. have a stand by database 3. do frequent hot backups 4. do frequent exports (I know it is not a back up, but nice to have thedata at a point in time. Also it makes sure that all the data blocks are okay; no block corruption due to a possible hardware problem.) 5. triple mirror (so I could break a mirror, backup the files on the "broken" mirror and resilver)
Some might add replication to a remote site. I take hot backups daily.
