Couldn't it be 'the jury' aka you displays a fundamental unfounded distrust in RMAN, without even ever have it tried? If you only consider the administrative chores RMAN relieves you from, that would be alone a proper reason to go for RMAN, and get rid of all those home grown hardcoded and hacked-together scripts.
