Can I start 2 instances in 1 ORACLE_HOME?

On my development box, I place my production init.ora and modify the control file location.

I would like to be able to "export ORACLE_SID=production", start my production instance in nomount mode, create the controlfile with a trace dump, then recover the instance.

However, in svrmgrl, I get something like an "end of file on communication channel" on the startup nomount.

I think there is some sort of IPC conflict.
