Metadata is simply data about data. It's not a specifically Oracle thing.
Anytime you store data somewhere which explains the meaning of, or other
attributes about, some data stored in a second location, that's metadata.
In Oracle's case, the data dictionary can be called metadata. Its a bunch
of records in tables which describe where other (your) tables are stored,
how big they are, what the columns are within them, how long those columns
are, whether they've got indexes on them and so on.
It does as a working definition, anyway!
