Thanks for everyone's responses. Here's my recap.

Veritas Volume Replication is a close but not perfect substitution for offline media backup. Key factors to consider are:

  1. Geographic dispersion of sites.
  2. Recovery from erronous changes (i.e. point in time recovery).
  3. Reliability of offline media.
  4. Use of robust audit trail.
