Connection Manager - How to reach MAXIMUM_RELAYS = 2048

Oracle 8i Net8 Adminstrator Guide states, that the Oracle Connection Manager is able to handle a maximum number of relays of 2048.

Running Oracle 8.1.7.2 32bit Connection Manager on Solaris 8, the highest number of relays we can get is 508. The appropriate kernel parameters for the maximum number of open filedescriptors per process "rlim_fd_max" and "rlim_fd_cur" is set to 2048.

Connection Manager opens 2 filedescriptors per relay, this leads to 1016 filedescriptors for 508 relays.

There are about 8 filedescriptors in use for internal handling of log and trace files and so.

The problem starts, when the connection manager process "cmgw" has 1024 open filedescriptors (checked with the Solaris command "pfiles <pid_of_cmgw_process>" ). After this, the connection manager hangs. Executing "cmctl stats" hangs. Even worse, if one of the existing relay connections is closed in this situation, the CMGW shut down itselfs.

Oracle Support was contacted, no useful response until now. Connection concentration + MTS can not be used because of application issues.

It is very simple to reproduce this behavoir of CMGW.

The same issue can be reproduced with Oracle 9.0.1.2 32bit Connection Manager, the maximum number of relays there is 486.

Behavior of Oracle 8.1.7.2 64bit and Oracle 9.0.1.2 64bit Connection Managers is only slightly different from the 32bit versions. The maximum number of relays we can reach are the same - 508 and 486 respectively. Only the error messages are different from the 32bit versions.

Is there anyone having successfully reached a higher number of RELAYS as 508 ? Any other ideas ?

Thanks.
