Native hostname adapter doesn't work

I have no tnsnames file and am trying to use the native hostname adapter.

We are using TCP/IP and there is only one database on serv1 and the listener is running OK.

DNS correctly resolves serv1 to the appropriate IP.

But, when I try to connect from SQL*Plus I get ORA-12154 errors - "tns cannot resolve service name"

The name of the database on the server is "prod"

Is there some other requirement for the native hostname adapter that I'm missing? Maybe wrt the database name? We would like to be able to "failover" users to a standby database simply by implementing a DNS change - is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any help.
