The hardware is the same but the product mix is too complex.

Analogy:
This is like testing two racecars, one with Mario Andretti at the wheel, and the other with Jeff Gordan at the wheel. Car #1 uses Penzoil, while Car #2 uses Quaker State. Car #1 runs on Goodyear tires while Car #2 uses Michelin.

How about this: On a basic Sun Ultra-450, run a test, running queries/updates through isql (Sybase) and sql-plus (Oracle).

I did some testing on my own, and found that Sybase was twice as fast at times. Test info is at:
