Error in invoking target install of makefile ...

I am having trouble installing Oracle 8i (ver 8.1.6) on my Linux 7.2 box. I keep getting the following error - "Error in invoking target install of makefile /usr/oracle/sqlplus/lib/ " on the following files:

ins_sqlplus.mk
ins_net_client.mk
ins_precomp.mk
ins_ldap.mk
ins_net_server.mk
ins_oemagent.mk
ins_ctx.mk
ins_odg.mk
ins_otrace.mk
ins_plsql.mk
ins_rdbms.mk

if anyone knows what is causing this and how to fix please let me know. The only solution I came up with was to ignore the error and continue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
