You have an alert log
Otherwise
a) you have a faulty installation
b) you never even opened any of the manuals
The alert log is in the directory pointed to by the background_dump_dest
parameter
If you didn't set it explicity in init<sid>.ora
on NT it is in \oracle\admin\<YOURSID>\bdump
on Unix I'm not too sure whether or not it is still in
$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/log
