Changing DTD after rows inserted in XMLType

We are evalutating storing data in an XMLType column but are concerned about the DTD being an easily changed component (as opposed to ALTER TABLE... which to my mind makes you look before you leap so to speak). Does anyone know of examples/case studies of situations where there is either more than one DTD for a given table, or a DTD is only valid for some of the rows?
