You seem to have misunderstood... the Instance runs generating redo 99% of the time. Once a month, a cold backup is taken, redo is switched off, a massive load performed, another backup, and redo is re-enabled. As I said, "It's obviously not something anyone in their right mind would consider running in for any length of time."

They don't (and the Instance isn't mine in the first place, no nerves of steel required!)
