TAF Oracle 9i RAC - works with 8.0.6 & 9.0.1 client but not with 8.1.7 client

I want my clients to hook up to a cluster using TAF - I've got following 'situation' ...

Oracle 9i (9.0.1) RAC on Win2000
- 2 nodes - instance names
  - socmut1
  - socmut2
- DBNAME
  - socmut
three types of clients using SAME tnsnames.ora/sqlnet.ora (see below) Client 9.0.1
- can connect to @socmut1, @socmut2
- can connect to @socmut

Client 8.0.6 (Forms6i)
- can connect to @socmut1, @socmut2

can connect to @socmut

*Client 8.1.7 *
- can connect to @socmut1, @socmut2

can connect NOT to @socmut ---> I get an ORA 12560 (see sqlnet.log/cli.log) For some reason the 8.1.7 client wants to connect over bequeth protocol to the remote DB ?

*Anyone seen this before ?*
