Oh, absolutely please don't DO this! As has been already said, you should use the ICG specific for your platform. and the CD or other Oracle media, and apply the upgrade as directed, or Oracle Support will hang up on you.

The only exception I can think of is a site where we had two perfectly identical Sun E9000's, down to disk and partition and file systems, everything. To avoid total chaos and shutting a factory down, the SA would image copy all disks from Prod to Test (with Prod down of course), and we would test-apply Oracle and Oracle Apps upgrades, releases, and patches on the mirror machine, first. So we'd avoid, say, breaking Oracle Purchasing with 250 invalid objects, on production.

I took down detailed notes, spent hours on the phone with Oracle, etc. When we had it down cold and perfect, then we applied the patch to production. That saved our lives a number of times.

Not everybody can afford an E9000 rigged out just like production, for such a purpose, but if you have the money to do it, I highly recommend it.
