Well, there's a lot to this, and you really do need to do some reading. But
the immediate answer to the highest priority question is Yes, the
instance(s) *must* be shut down before you do a cold backup, or any backed
up files will be unusable (I think the backup utility will not copy them
anyway, as the files are open).
There are better ways of shutting down the instance(s) than stopping the
services, but that at least would be a start.
For *only* getting a successful cold backup, you don't need to worry about archivelog mode (yet, until you've done some of that reading). That's for other types of recovery.
To others, before war breaks out, this is a _starting_ point. Yes, I am aware of the issues. Let's help Andrew at least get a cold backup first.
