You may want to try this, in leiu of a lengthy explanation...I've done a lot of troubleshooting on client installs on Windoze clients.

  1. Un-install all Oracle client software using the Oracle Installer. (NOT ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS!!)
  2. Delete ALL references to Oracle in the client registry. Delete all directories that the Oracle un-install missed (it sometimes misses stuff in the Start menu).
  3. Reboot.
  4. Re-install the "older" Oracle software FIRST.
  5. Re-install the newer (8.1.x) software SECOND in a separate ORACLE_HOME.
  6. Place your TNSNAMES.ORA file in BOTH the older ORACLE_HOME and the 8.1.x ORACLE_HOME.
  7. Reboot.
