Not silly at all, IMHO (but this may be of limited use, as we haven't tested W2K properly yet). OTOH, I don't think NT5 will be all that different to NT4. NT5.1 (alias XP) may be a different kettle of fish...

Up to now we have had no problem connecting 8.1.7 client (on NT4 and HPUX) to *any* earlier (7.3.4+) versions (except for db links and snapshots, which do seem to have the odd gotcha).

I have heard (unofficially, not tested yet) that 8.1.7.3 can't connect properly to 7.3 instances for snapshots.

BTW, we have production databases on 804, 805, 806, 815, 816 and 817. I know it sounds silly on the face of it, and it would be very nice to rationalise, but each app is under the control of different owners, and (not unreasonably IMHO), the app owners want to see full regression testing on their own app before they upgrade the db version (even patches).

This is not always easy, unless funds are allocated.
