Adding to Howards comments
NLS variables for the Winblows client exist in hkey\local_machine\software\oracle in the registry On logon they are read by the client which fires alter session statements. You might also run into issues because your clients is some 5 or 6 releases later than your (desupported) database server 8.0.4
