Can RMAN or 3rd Party Utility backup to disk?

We jumped into purchasing Veritas BackupExec for NT/2000 and its Oracle Agent before discovering it does not support Oracle 8i's RMAN feature. It's too late and there are not enough funds to buy Veritas NetBackup Utility.

To please our DBA, we (System Administrators) are trying to come up with a workaround... Any thoughts if RMAN can create a save set backup to a hard drive (instead of tape) or is a 3rd party utility available that can do the same?

We're *hoping* the database can be written to hard drive in RMAN format and the tape backup can grab the files during its normal backup??
