I think that the requirements for Oracle 8.1.7 are 256megs of RAM. I did install it succesfully on a machine with 128 megs (a HP9000, not a x86, all our x86 have at least 512 megs) by adding a lot of swap space.

The Sun Java version doesn't mather, Oracle use it's own build of Java as you can see.
