Oracle 9i questions

I am upgrading to 9i from 8.1.5. i noticed that in 8.1.5 there where 2
services that it used (tnsListner and the SID service). However, after
loading oracle 9i....the tns listener service is not there. is this right???
i have a java application that connects to the DB and does a simple select.
This worked fine under 8.1.5, however when i do it under 9i, i get the
network adapter cannot establish connection error.
