The answer is it depends!

It could be anything.

In the past I have had apps where they though it was a DB problem and it turned out to be a network problem and vice versa. For example, by issuing the 'netstat -s' command on the box I saw a ton of network rexmits and had the UNIX SYSADM's tweak the TCP/IP stack to increase rexmit intervals to improve the app since it was over a WAN.

My point is you must know the environment, database, application, hardware, etc,.

Maybe you can invest in an Enterprise tools such as Tivoli or Patrol to help you over night. Received on Sat Feb 02 2002 - 15:18:58 CST
