Just my 2c and probably OT as not related to Oracle but there are databases claiming to support much higher throughput (real-time, in-memory databases, which can avoid lot of management overhead due to the fact that they do not have do manage any file i/o or caches/buffers.) One reference i have found is http://www.entitydatabase.com

They report >10.000 transactions on a 140 SpecInt 92 computer (a 200 MHz Pentium Pro has approx. 336 SPECbase_int92 a terrain we have left since a while...)
