external tables and DB3 files

I tried to read the documentation about External Tables (a new Oracle9i feature). There is a note about "third party access drivers" but it seems that the only existing access driver is ORACLE_LOADER, a sort of in-place SQL*Loader.
This is useful for text files, but I have to attach DB3 files instead. Does someone knows if there are other drivers available? If not, is there a way to load DB3 files as they were text files? (without transforming them before, of course) A lot of time ago there was an utility called DB3PREP. Does someone recall how it worked?

TIA, Cris
