REPOST: ora-24314 service handle not initialized

Hi,

I installed an Oracle 9i db on Linux Suse 7.2. Installation and db-creation went fine. After db-creation I can logon to the db and start and stop it. But after a reboot of the machine I always get the error 'ora-24314 service handle not initialized' when I try to startup the db.
Oracle help doesn't provide any clues and I don't have a metalink account. So I even don't have a clue what the message means; e.g. what is a service handle?

Any suggestions?
