advanced replication

How does AR rank for a high availability setup? (ver. 8.1.6) I only have the standard edition, so can't do that much anyways. I've also got disk mirroring in place, so I'm a little worried about a performance drop. There's a program my company is thinking of getting, Double-Take, which helps create a hot spare, but AR provides a bit of load-balancing, but AR might have reduced performance...don't know...
