thanks for your help as ever.

Sybrand : No idea what a 10051 trace produces in 8.0.5, but the docs say that it is an OPI trace. Not as helpful as it could be.

John : I tried running the select manually and it takes 35-40 seconds however, adding a first_rows hint runs it in 40 milli-seconds. That should please the developer and customer.

Histograms are no good because the application passes bind variables, howver, the application does have an option to supply first row hints, and the customer has that option turned off at present.
