Personal Oracle 8i Manual Control?

We are using a version of Personal Oracle 8i (8.1.7) that came from a textbook publisher. It installs so as to start the database automatically when the host PC boots up. While the instructions provide a way to start the database (if it fails to start automatically) using Server Manager (svrmgrl.exe), no instructions are provided to shut the database down manually. It appears that Server Manager (command line, no help) expects the user to first log on to the database and then issue some sort of shutdown command. Does anybody know the correct syntax for these commands, or an easier way to control the database?
Oracle running all the time bogs the school PC's down too much for users of other software.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
