what version of linux?

Oracle 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 for linux were geared the 6.2 RedHat kernel. There is a ton of compatibility crap that you have to do to get it to run under RH7.2, which I have done and runs successfully now.

To keep it simple...
The NT client adds the ODBC resources that you need to connect to oracle and also installs the oracle related stuff if you want to connect natively along with some apps. You can put it on NT, 2K and XP. I have this config. You may want to go to otn.oracle.com and register. Then grab the updated ODBC drivers and install those when your done on the Win box.
