After I increased the size of my TEMP tablespace a DB which was taking 2 - 3 hours to shutdown would shutdown in 2 - 3 minutes. It has something to do with giving SMON enough free resources to quickly rollback an uncommitted transaction.

It is like giving chicken soup to a dead man. It can't hurt anything.
