I not seen this error before, and I've installed Oracle 8i (8.1.7) Enterprise on multiple Windows 2000 Pro notebook computers w/o any problems at all.

Question: Does your Win2K Pro computer have any previous Oracle installation on it at all? I have seen problems installing a newer version of Oracle on a computer that has a previous installation. When these problems occur, we usually wipe the old Oracle installation (both directories and registry entries), and try the install again. In most cases this always works.
