Oracle 8.1.6 Installation hangs abruptly

I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.6 from a CD on to  RedHat 7.2.. 
I carefully followed the instructions but when I attempt to run the
runInstaller, I get this message



Initializing Java Virtual Machine from


../stage/components........./linux/bin/jre ..Please Wait...



I waited for more than 30 minutes but no luck



What could have possibly been wrong????
