A minor correction: there is precisely zero need to change the
remote_login_passwordfile parameter to NONE to make O/S authentication work.
All that does is to say that there isn't a password file to check (which may
well be appropriate, but it's not necessary to 'switch on' O/S
authentication, since that is checked first, regardless of whether there's a
password file or not).
Membership of the ORA_DBA group alone is sufficient to make O/S authentication work, and 'connect internal' will then work without needing a password in all releases prior to 9i (although I agree with you that the '/ as sysdba' method is preferred.
