moving control files

Hello...

Trying to move my control files from their default positions.

Tried using Instance Manger in the All Parameters window. logged on as Internal, System, and Sys. The values are not available for changing.

Tried editing init.ora, and editing def_sid.ora. Neither had any effect (according to the All Parameters window, which still showed all control files in the same default place). Tried this with (and without) moving the control files to the specified place.

Default Oracle install (8.1.7). Default database creation.

Any suggestions?
