We have made the "big jump" (7.3.4 -> 9.0.1) because we were insterested to the new data warehousing, OLAP and XML features included in 9i. Moreover, since our upgrade frequency it's rather low so we choosed to move to the most recent version because we hope he has a longer support life than 8.1.7.
We have just started to work with the new platform so perhaps it's too soon to recommend it or not. Until now it seems stable as any other Oracle versions I have seen.
