Hello All

I am in the process of converting some of our database files to quick i/o. I don't have the Database Edition of Veritas so I don't have access to qio_convertdbfiles. I read that qio_converdbfiles -f will report on fragmentation of the database files. Apparently quick i/o benefits will not be seen if the file is highly fragmented. My question is: is this fragmentation at the database level or the OS level?
I'm assuming OS level. How would my database files get fragmented over time at an OS level. When a data file is added to the database isn't the space allocated contiguously?

Another question. Does anybody have any korn scripts which backup/restore the quick i/o files. My scripts gzips all of the files from dba_data_files in parallel and then does the reverse for a restore. I figure I'll now have to restore them serially to the setext is done properly. Also gunzip to the .filename and recreate the symbolic link.

any help greatly appreciated

Mike
