OK, so it wasn't quite that long a posting :o)

I was answered by Connor and Ron Reidy (by private email) and the outcome was buy the book Oracle SQL High Performance Tuning (second edition) by Guy Harrison, published by Prentice Hall ISBN is 0-13-012381-1, and/or read the Oracle 9i docs. So I bought the book and I'm getting hold of the 9i docs even as I type.

The book looks pretty thorough in its coverage so hopefully, it will be £40 well spent. If not, I'll be sending the heavies round to visit Ron :o)

Thanks for your help guys. Much appreciated.

Regards,
Norman.

PS. The intro to the book says 'this book is not for DBAs' I would have to differ on that, arn't we the ones who end up sorting out all that crap SQL statements eventually ?
