Dana- I'm a little biased against online training. I have tried it before and found that it just wasn't for me (I haven't tried Oracle U. but I have tried others). I don't know of anyone else that has successfully done much with online learning, either.
That being said, I have just started the OCP DBA course on my own with Sybex's OCP books (ISBN 0782126855).

Anyways, I am coming completely new to Oracle and the Database world in general. I have several years of experience with networking and computers (I have an MCSE and Novell CNA) so I think that helps a little, but not "a lot," as RDBMS is an entirely different world than systems admin/engineer work.
I would recommend giving the books a shot and try to learn on your own without Oracle U. Make sure you have an NT or Windows 2000 system to install Oracle 8i on so you can get some hands on experience. (The 8i CD comes with the aforementioned book but all flavors (NT, Unix, Linux) are available for download from http://technet.oracle.com.

Some of the professional DBAs here will probably scoff at a novice becoming an OCP DBA. After all, it's really more about experience than new-found knowledge, and I'm the first to admit that. I think the same of paper-MCSE's that pay their ten grand for 10 week bootcamps and come out as MCSEs without ever touching a production system....but I digress. My pursuit of the OCP DBA is based a need and desire to learn Oracle and I've found that certification tracks tend to teach the basics better than non-certification training.

So, I'm sure you're going to get a lot of differing opinions on this. For me, online training doesn't work. I'm sure there are exceptions, however. Of course, you may be well served to also peruse some of the Oracle docs here:
http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_library/817_doc/server.817/ index.htm
In particular, 8i Concepts. It may help you decide whether or not this track is right for you. (You'll need to register to access that site, but it's free and well worth your time).

Good luck with whatever route you decide.

Blaine
