I had this problem on 8i personal because I'm running win 2000 on my laptop and it removes the ip address when you unplug the network connection. A simple fix was to set the HOST = 127.0.0.1 in the tnsnames.ora. Not sure if this is what you meant by `bequeath entry` but it did the trick for me.
