I have to plead ignorance on the oracle_base issue - I've never come across it! Maybe I'm aware of it but not the name. Where does one 'see' the term oracle base? I didn't see anything during the install.

I went ahead and installed 9i on the same server as 8i. Chose a new home. Basically, everything went well and I can access both 8i and 9i databases. But there is one mystery ...

The 9i install did not create a separate listenter. If I stop the 8i listener, NO database can be accessed, and when I restart the 8i listener, ALL databases can be accessed. BUT- there is no entry in the 8i listener.ora file for the 9i databases!

Also - if I stop/start the listener (8i), and try to connect to any 9i database, I get an error.

ora-12505: TNS: listener could not resolve SID given in connect descriptor.

But if I connect to an 8i database first, then try the above, I get an error once, twice, but connect the third time! I've reproduced this about 4 times now.

I could manually edit listener.ora and add the 9i databases, (which will 'probably' fix this) but I was curious as to what is going on here - how is the listener 'listening' if it does not have an entry in listener.ora?

Thanks! Chris
