If you are a relative beginner then avoid both until you;ve learned one of the cleaner/simpler/purer RDBM's. The complexities of the bodges in these two products will end up causing you alot of confusion : "Why would one want to do that, and why do it that way, why why why?". Sybase is a good choice. Or look at Interbase which also has a fully functional free open source version (although interbase is a versioning database, which I personally prefer, rather than using the traditonal record/table locking idea). Interbase also suffers from crap tools (or you have to pay good money).
