Can anyone tell me what the shared memory realm is and how it affects the startup of the database.

I have had an issue with this problem where by my databases would not start up and issued the error Shared memory realm does not exist. Spoke to Oracle and was told to put a new variable for the sid in the system environment tab, and had to rem out a line in the SQLNET.ora file
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) But still am not sure how this affected the database.
