OracleAgent startup error

I have installed Oracle8i in Windows 2000. The identity(computer name and workgroup) of my computer is non-standard ASCII character when I installed the Oracle. Afting I chagned it to a new indentity with standard ASCII character, the OracleAgent cannot startup.
Although it cannot startup, it seems that my connection to database is not affected.
What is the function of OracalAgent?
How can I make it available again?
